Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant Increased to £7,500

New Grant Levels for Heat Pumps Starting October 23, 2023

Starting from October 23, 2023, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant for heat pumps will be increased. Homeowners can now receive up to £7,500, an increase from the previous £5,000 for air source heat pumps and £6,000 for ground source heat pumps. The new rules also make it easier than ever to obtain the grant.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed to help homeowners and small business owners cover the upfront costs of installing heat pumps, promoting the adoption of eco-friendly heating technology. This scheme will run until 2028, providing substantial financial support to those looking to save on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

How Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Work?

The scheme operates on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Here’s how you can benefit:

  1. Register Interest: Homeowners or small business owners must first register their interest with accredited heat pump installers, such as OHM Energy.
  2. Application Process: We will handle the application for the £7,500 grant from Ofgem on your behalf.
  3. Grant Deduction: The grant amount will be deducted from your total installation bill, significantly reducing your upfront costs.
Are You Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

To qualify for a heat pump grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Homeowner or Small Business Owner: The property must be located in England or Wales.
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): An EPC issued within the last 10 years with no recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation, or you must complete any recommended insulation before heat pump installation.
  • Biomass Boiler Discount: For biomass boilers, the property must meet high emissions standards, be in a rural area, and have no mains gas connection.
How to Apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant?

The application process is installer-led. Here’s how to apply:

  1. Contact an Installer: Speak to heat pump installers like OHM Energy to start the process.
  2. Voucher Application: We will apply for the grant voucher on your behalf on a first-come, first-served basis.
  3. Revoking Unused Vouchers: If you have an unused £5,000 voucher, we can help you revoke it and reapply for the increased £7,500 voucher.
  4. Installation: Once you receive the new voucher, you have three months to install an air source heat pump or six months for a ground source heat pump.
  5. Redeem Voucher: After installation, redeem your voucher to reduce the overall cost. For example, a heat pump costing £10,000 would only cost you £2,500 after applying the grant.
