St Hugh’s was founded in 1873, when the property was acquired to accommodate two houses of French Carthusian monks in exile. The Carthusians are a Catholic monastic order founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno who live a hermetic life in a very small community. There are 21 Orders globally and 26 monastics commit to a life of solitude on the 240 hectare site in Horsham.
The Lodge of St Hugh’s is a Grade II listed building so the Order had opted for a ground mounted solar array to power the premises. We installed 500 x 410W Trina solar panels with a maximum output of 205kW. The projected energy yield of this system is 231,650 kWh with an annual saving/ total income of £27,196, payback period of 6 years 7 months and total co2 saving 2,307 tonnes.
With current electricity rates usually between 30-50p per kWh, the system will pay for itself within six years and seven months.
