What Does A Labour Win Mean For Sustainability In The UK?

The results are in… Labour will be the new government for the UK. What does this mean for Net Zero and how will it impact your access to sustainable solutions?

Labour have a whole manifesto on Net Zero 2030 and what they plan to do. They say they plan to “cut bills, create jobs and deliver security with cheaper, zero-carbon electricity by 2030, accelerating to net zero”. Their missions “is to make the UK a clean energy superpower”. But how exactly are they going to do this and how does that affect you?

Ambitious Targets

Labour plan to triple solar power to 50 GW by 2030 as well as quadrupling off shore wind in that same timeframe. To achieve this they have laid out plans to “dismantle the grid queue” and work to “remove the barriers to facilitate the largest upgrade to our national transmission infrastructure in a generation” which they say will bring “cheaper, cleaner power, energy security, and jobs to every corner of the country”.

For the general public these goals are part of their goal of cutting “up to £1,400 off the annual household bill”. The hope is that this plan will “save UK households £93 billion over the rest of this decade”.

They also have the aim of cutting “£53 billion off energy bills for businesses by 2030”.

Part of the approach to achieve these numbers is by partnering with energy companies, local authorities and co-operatives to install thousands of clean energy projects, including solar and onshore wind.

Funding

With the overarching mission to “make the UK a clean energy superpower” comes a commitment to spending. Labour say they will “allocate a fund of up to £500m, starting from the 2025-26 contract or diff erence auction round to provide capital grants to incentivise companies developing clean technologies like off shore wind, onshore wind, solar, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage.

The creation of ‘Great British Energy (GBE), a new publicly-owned clean generation company will also come with a spend of £8.3 billion over the next Parliament.

With a large commitment to the Renewable Energy sector we look forward to learning more details on Labour’s plans and hope to see a greater focus on sustainability.
