Circular economy specialist Reconomy asserts that its 10-point regulatory framework will significantly bolster the UK economy and support the achievement of net-zero targets.
Steve Reed, the newly appointed Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, highlighted the “roadmap to move Britain to a zero-waste economy” as a key priority among the Labour government’s top five.
Reconomy’s framework aims to establish a consistent and business-friendly regulatory environment. The company claims that adopting a circular economy could add £82 billion to the UK economy and generate up to 284,000 jobs in London by 2030.
Developed in collaboration with sustainability consultant Sancroft and through consultations with waste experts and public and private sector organizations, the framework is designed to reduce the environmental impacts of waste.
Its 10 principles aim to streamline the waste system, enhancing recycling rates and resource management. Key features include national minimum standards, a new infrastructure strategy, consistent waste collection, increased recycling frequency, baseline data for monitoring, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, eco-design standards, EPR funding, digital resource tracking, and an independent governing body.
Reconomy emphasizes that its guidance addresses major emissions issues within the waste sector, noting that energy-from-waste plants contribute 6% of the UK’s GHG emissions, while landfill emissions account for 60% of waste sector emissions.
Guy Wakeley, Group Chief Executive of Reconomy, stated, “To meet our climate objectives, protect finite resources, and grow the economy, it is crucial that this new government takes steps to help businesses and communities improve resource management.”
Jason Lindfield, CEO of OHM Energy Ltd, added, “The integration of renewable energy with circular economy principles is essential for a sustainable future. Reconomy’s framework provides a clear path for businesses to align their waste management practices with broader environmental goals, making it easier for the renewable energy sector to contribute to a zero-waste economy.”
